Loving Metro-North…and other free things…

Where AB decides it is time to write with others while contemplating the zen of commuter trains

I love MetroNorth…

Wow. This is TL;DR if ever I saw one.

Like every other form of public transportation, MetroNorth has had its problems, but overall their folks are friendly, their trains are clean (mostly), and I usually find a seat. Reading, for me, is an exercise in relaxation as well as learning (depends on the book!) so I find that sitting is more conducive to the absorption of information rather than standing.

Not that there is anything wrong with standing while you read. Live how you want to live.

Of course, writing is also better done while sitting (unless you’re dictating! Again, live how you want to live) as this post so aptly proves.

I don’t normally send out a newsletter since I prefer to let my fiction speak for itself, but I don’t want you to feel neglected either. I am working on my next series (10 books! A prequel novella for $49.99! Yes, you read that right, but it’ll be mostly free), but that doesn’t mean I’m not working on anything else.

For example, just last month I was in Ohio meeting up with a few writing buddies when we decided to write one short story each once a day for three days. Since there were four of us that meant we would have twelve stories written by weekend’s end.

Sounds like an anthology to me!

The (Other) Writers in Attendance

Derek E. Miller

Derek spent five years as a military contractor in the war zone of Afghanistan. The experience left him with friends all over the world, an appreciation for our men and women in the military, and an uncontrollable desire to hit the ground whenever fireworks go off. His books: Military Contractor’s Handbook, The Attic Diary, Kamikaze Diary, and Ghost Army Diary.

Jesse R. Lyle

Jesse (A.B.: as you can tell) wears many hats. He backed into writing short fiction after he and his D&D buddies’ campaigns started drifting into real life and gave him a taste for creating new universes and odd characters.

Serena B. Miller

Serena is an award-winning, best-selling author who has written multiple romances about the large Amish population living near her in Ohio. Two made-for-TV movies, An Uncommon Grace and Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, have been based on her novels. Serena also writes historical and contemporary fiction and is presently working on a line of cozy mysteries: The Secrets of Sugarcreek.

And the Big Cover Reveal

I don’t normally write supernatural stories, but I will admit that a lot of fiction easily fits that genre once you put two or more human being together in a room and have strange things happen to them.

The anthology is tentatively titled Beyond The Door. It even has a cover (you know, the picture above)!

Newsletter FAQ
When is the anthology coming out?
Soon. Not accurate enough? Maybe October. What better time to release a book of scary stories.

Is there no hope of ever seeing an anthology out of BSB? Ah, I see you’ve decided to use BSB as the moniker for Brushed Steel Books. Good.

Returning to the question: yes! BSB will be publishing an anthology by a new up-and-coming writer whose name I am not allowed to reveal (except that it is oddly explicit on the cover you might be seeing in an upcoming email from BSB itself!) under a new imprint called Unlikely Experiments (that might change as well).

Free if you act next time!

For your reading pleasure, I will make one of the 12 stories from Beyond The Door available through this newsletter next time (in a week or two). This may or may not be the story’s final form (the release date is October 31, 2018) and you won’t need to sign up for anything; you’ll just click on a link and the story will be available for your reading pleasure.

Well, okay, it’s free even if you act later, but I can’t guarantee how long I’ll leave the story up so once it’s available. I would recommend downloading it while the PDF is still warm.

I’d love to know what you think of the cover! Send your comments to abalvarez@brushedsteelbooks.com.

Free story coming next time!

Stay well!
